There are thousands of time management courses I bet. Probably a few hundred written for Mums.

This is as simple as it gets for you, with a couple of extra twists I’ve added in to spice it up and make it more effective.

It can be so difficult to work out what needs doing when there are potentially months worth of things that you ‘could’ be doing. Just making the time to sit down and work out what the To Do list is takes time ironically!

You Don’t Have To Do Everything

and

Five Minutes Is Important

Just remember it’s not a race, you don’t ‘HAVE’ to do everything and 5 minutes can be a valuable slot of time. So it is perfectly polite to say to someone that you can’t do something or that you don’t have ‘five minutes’ (which means at least 15mins) to help them out.

If you want to be sure that you finish the week without panic about what still needs doing and at least enough things for you to feel some satisfaction and contentment with how the week went, then you will need to make a list. I doubt that there are more than a couple of tired Mums out there with the ability to hold it all in their heads. The rest of us will otherwise fiddle around, fire fight, suddenly realise we did things in the wrong order and have last minute panics to get things done, which inevitably means shouting at the kids.

In my book I go into this in much more detail. It’s the step that makes one of the biggest differences in my life, but also seems to be the one that I have to continue to keep my eye on and adjust as the kids grow and life changes. So I thought I’d do a quick summary for you:

1) First you need to work out your 3 Life Priorities.

2) From here you can work out your Top To Do’s that are non-negotiable

3) The stuff that is lowest down the priority pile gets dumped

4) Then work out what can be delegated

5) Then work out what else you are going to attempt to do

6) And what you are going to delay

My Top 3 To Do’s are pretty simple and apart from (2) don’t take any time, but I remind myself each morning. Sometimes I still forget, as I did when I wrote this post and realised that I hadn’t adjusted to the changes in my family’s life caused by the big hairy ones redundancy:

1) Cuddle the kids, do the evening book read every other night, make something creative each week (then I’m a happy mummy)

2) Write, write, write, but write in a way that will help my books become the must have ‘pick me up’ books for mums and that I enjoy

3) Drink water, eat healthily, walk the dog, play with the kids, watch my thoughts, count my blessings each night

The best bit is you can treat yourself to a cup of tea and at least one biscuit while you are doing it!

If you would like some help with working out your Life Priorities and your top priority to do’s then either pop over to my Facebook page and ask a question, or come and join in the fun on Pinterest in my board all about Life Priorities.

Feel free to commit to your top 3 to do’s and pop them in a comment below; I’d love to know, I’m sure everyone is very different.

Cuteness alert!

This wasn’t just any old half-term.

This was the one where Little Dimples turned two and totally ‘got’ what a birthday was.

So here she is singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to herself!

Oh and if you didn’t get the last few words, we reckon it was ‘and there you go’!

I know that the subject of sick children is really hard to think about, so many of you will want to ignore the fact that this is to do with CLIC. All I’m asking is that you think about it for a second. Some families have kids who aren’t well enough to sing ‘Happy Birthday’. But organisations like CLIC make it easier on the children and the families. We might not be able to get rid of all disease; that’s not possible. But charities that support families at these tough times are therefore very worthwhile to give your hard earned money to.

This post is being written as part of the blog prompt for #DoSomethingYummy from Typecast which is the campaign for CLIC Sargent Charity for children with cancer. I’ve picked the prompt ‘Of Half-term and getting the kids involved‘.

The answer is: use your common sense (which isn’t the same as ignoring it or over-worrying about it). You don’t need every supplement, and health food shops are full to the brim of ideas for you to spend your money on.

If you follow my tips on healthy eating, weight loss and exercise and you are feeling in tip top condition, then no, I doubt you need a supplement.

But if you are exhausted and have tried all my tips to get more energy, are sleep deprived and generally feel rubbish, then yes, maybe it would be a good plan. The sorts of things that can be helped are PMT, joint pains, digestive issues, skin problems, depression, I even saw them help Alopecia on ‘The Food Hospital’ on Channel 4.

My top tip on supplementation is to ASK someone who knows more than you and knows more than the internet. Sometimes the people who work in health food shops can be really helpful. Sometimes you might actually want to talk to a nutritionist, homeopath or medical herbalist. You might even have a great doctor who is willing to do a test for you to check how you are doing, as general exhaustion can also be a sign of deeper problems. If they won’t do a check on your body’s nutrients, then you will find that there are private professionals who will; but make sure that you use someone with loads of experience who has come well recommended to you.

I think that the biggest question is whether to take a multi-vitamin or not. Some people claim that you can get all the vitamins that you need from a healthy balanced diet. Some claim that unless you eat totally organic, the quality of our vegetables and meat is not good enough any more and you will need vitamins. My answer is; does your body feel healthy and vital? If not, what’s wrong with it? Maybe consider a supplement or vitamin.

I do use supplements, so I’m going to list what I use here or have used. For all of them there is a really obvious reason, I’m not just supplementing for no reason. Plus I have asked professionals about the combination of them.

Bear in mind that I haven’t slept through the night in 6 yrs, I have 2 young children (6yo and 2yo), I co-sleep and am an extended breast-feeder, as well as working from home when you look at my list!

1) Floradix: A liquid mineral and iron supplement: This is magic in a bottle for me when I’m breast feeding, and it doesn’t constipate you like iron can. Without it I was getting HUGE bruises, but within a couple of weeks of going back on it I had tonnes more energy and the bruises were gone.

2) Vitamins: I take the ones for breast-feeding women as those little tikes do tend to suck all the good bits out of our bodies.

3) Omega 3, 6 and 9: My brain works better with these, REALLY noticeably!

4) Vitamin C: My body really likes me taking vitamin C, despite the fact that I pretty much always hit my 5 a day. Maybe it’s habit, but I don’t feel as good starting the day without it.

5) Probiotic: A proper ‘pill’ one, rather than a yogurt with sugar. Mine come from Optibac who kindly sent me a couple of packs to try for free. I’d been having stomach cramps and this totally fixed it. I’m going to write a proper post all about what probiotics are in the next couple of weeks for you.

I was talking to a friend today about the fact that she reckoned that supplements had helped her depression. I know of loads of people who swear by whatever it is that they take. There is a possibility that it is a case of the vitamins being a placebo. But then there is research to show that even operations can be placebos because of the power of the mind. I don’t really care, what is most important is that the proof is in the pudding. There will be times in your life when you need a little extra help. If the help is there and available, then I think it’s well worth it.

BUT, I’ll say again; it’s wise to get advise because herbs, vitamins, minerals and supplements are actually a lot more powerful than you might think. You can take the wrong things that might make the symptoms worse or disagree with something else you are taking.

One final word: If you are pregnant, then it’s crucial that you take a multi-vitamin that is tailored for your needs and includes folic acid. If you are pregnant with twins, get professional advice about whether you need more.

What are your favourite supplements?

Or do you think that it should be possible to survive without them?

I have what I call a ‘juicy’ family history. Ironically, it’s not some of the more difficult or shocking things that happened in my past that causes me trouble sometimes; I’ve been there, dealt with most of them and forgotten more than I can remember. No, at the moment I’ve realised that I’m still haunted by the ‘Cinderella complex’. I was reminded of it when I read Claire Macnaughton’s post.

I’m writing about it as a warning to all Mums of young daughters, who like Little Dimples, might like watching Snow White or any of the other hundreds of disney films available.

So cut to my teenage; ailing elderly parents, and many an afternoon watching subtly brainwashing black and white movies to make sure I stayed chaste and ‘saved myself’ for ‘the one’. This was a very clever move on behalf of my mother, who was never going to do ‘the talk’ with me.

I was a thorough romantic and loved any type of romantic film. But it birthed a belief in me that there would be ‘ONE’ person that I could rely on for ever and for everything, who would be totally and persistently reliable. This belief has haunted me ever since in many different formats, and I’m still trying to shake it. It is a truly dangerous believe, because it is totally impossible for it to be true and I’d held it as a basic fabric of my existence.

The truth is that everyone is reliable, if you understand them well enough to be able to predict their behaviour. However, they won’t always be able to be there for you, do what you want them to do or want to be there for you. Plus if you don’t know them deeply it can appear that they are very unpredictable. Problem is; no one told me that.

At about 20 I suddenly realised that my mother (nick named the ‘wicked witch of the west’) wasn’t that all encompassing ‘would love me whatever I did’ person and quickly put the crown of responsibility on the big hairy northern husband’s head. We are obviously still together 23yrs later, but that crown well and truly fell off. I didn’t mind the crown falling off his head, but my problem was that I realised that no one else was going to pick it up. It broke my heart and made me question the worth of the world for a scary while.

I thought I’d cracked it, but I actually replaced it with therapy; specifically the very complicated one that I’ve trained in. This let me down as a Mum, as it was totally impractical in the life of a mum. You can see where I was motivated to create the ‘Mummy Whisperer’ from now can’t you ; to create that reliable presence on the internet or in a book that a Mum could just pick up whenever she needed it?

I thought I had cracked it again. But in my recent tiredness, I realised that I had sneakily replaced it with a slightly different belief; that I could be sure of what I was getting from people I paid. Hence I employed a cleaner, and little old irish granny and would often choose to throw money at a problem, whether it was needing some energy (reflexology) or getting some DIY done.

It’s not so dangerous a belief any more, just uncomfortable to discover with hubby being made redundant, so a lot of the support systems I had built up are no longer there. I’m tired.

Time to look for a new option maybe? Or time to break the myth so that it doesn’t cause me trouble any more? I know that there are predictable things in the world, but none of them are sufficient for me; even the weather seems unreliable now a days! Perhaps I should look at why I wouldn’t want one reliable source of support; it would actually be very suffocating after all?

In the meantime, I don’t think that ‘Twilight’, ‘Disney’ or ‘Gone with the wind’ have ruined my life. But as a Mum of a little girl, I plan to just whisper a few realities in her ear so that she doesn’t grow up to face the harsh lessons that I did. It’s a fine balance between allowing her to see and feel the magic in the world, but also have two feet grounded on the realities of the world.

Isn’t it ironic that what seemed like one of the easiest parts of my childhood has actually caused one of the biggest problems?

Have you found that some of the best times of your childhood have made your adulthood difficult?

Did you fall for the Cinderella complex? Does it affect what you let your children watch?

I’d love to know what you think.

So we duly watched the first Jonny English with them both (Little Dimples will watch anything her brother watches, purely because he thinks it’s good), and laughed lots, but did cringe at the use of the word ‘arse’. Luckily my son totally missed it. What I did worry about was the CONSTANT stream of questions from him. It is very fast moving and often he got confused and then would be asking what was happening, just as it was explained on the film, which he then obviously missed; so it just kept happening over and OVER and OVER AGAIN!

Off we trotted on the train and tube (which of course kids think is great) to London. It was a perfect little cinema for Little Dimple’s first time; which she proved by falling asleep throughout the whole thing despite all the noise.

I thought the film was much better than the first, but time has moved on, so I suppose it had to be more with the times. I’m not a fan of slapstick; you know how I’ve realised I hate misunderstandings. But this only had three situations that I couldn’t bare to watch, which isn’t too bad at all. Plus the language was much better, with just one use of the word ‘turd’. I find it fascinating that Jonny English can turn from really very sexy to cringeworthy in a matter of seconds.

With a very satisfied family we popped to Regents park afterwards as I’d never been there. It seemed like a good idea to get some fresh air, but possibly we misjudged the level of tiredness, as removing Little Dimples from the freezing park was very unpleasant (think screaming kicking tantrum all the way to the tube). She cheered up on the train home and made a friend; as you do at two years old, purely because you are both the same age. All was calm by the time we got home and as you can see they are loving their new T shirts.

The final verdict: Curly Headed Boy LOVED it, and seemed to follow it much more easily, and is now a huge fan of Jonny. I reckon that with a bag of popcorn it’s a good plan for this half-term, and a film that your kids will want to watch over and over. It was also a big change for us to watch something with ‘real’ people in it for once, rather than a cartoon based film. Ironically, having been sent to see the film for free, we are now going to have to buy it because my kids love watching their favourite films over and over. Here’s the link to play.com if you fancy it too.

7 Top Tips For Getting The Family Motivated

1) Take it step by step and don’t aim straight for 5 a day straight away if you are nowhere near it. Start with an objective of 3 or 4 and work up over a couple of months. After a while it becomes a habit and it’s no longer something you have to work at and you’ll find that when they start school, they’ll get told all about how important 5 a day is too.

2) Put the little ones in charge of it, I made Curly Headed Boy the boss of the 5 a day in our house for a while; the hairy northern hubby needed some encouraging too, so it was perfect to have my son involved.

3) Add stars/stickers for success; There are some lovely charts that you can make or buy to help you out

4) Have a fruit snack for morning snack, and save the treats for the afternoon (i.e. relatively healthy biscuit) and make it a ‘rule’. Because it’s a ‘rule’ it has eventually been accepted as gospel in our house, plus it means I can save all potential forms of bribery until later in the day (yep, I am a sneaky mummy!).

5) Maybe this is a big change in the way your household works, but you’re the parent, so you have the right to change it. Explain why it’s important to you that everyone in the house is healthy, and how it will help them with their concentration/fitness/sport/health/skin/parents health. Then make sure that you are certain and confident as you tell them that it’s going to change, and from then on STICK to it, and be CONSISTENT!

6) If each meal has some kind of 5 a day aspect to it, and you have a snack that is fruit based as well, then you only have to add 1 more portion in to one of the meals.

7) Make Dessert always fruit based at dinner time. If you don’t have dessert, consider doing so because it helps reduce your adult portions of a main meal, and gives a chance to eat a little more until you are full. It also helps kids that are easily bored by food. If you tend to have sweet desserts as in cakes, pies or puddings every night, then this might be a big change, but really those should only be treats once a week or less, not every night. Your kids are very likely to grow up with a weight problem if they get into a habit like that.

10 Top Ideas On Where To Eat The 5 A Day

1) Different types of the same fruit or vegetable can taste very different; make sure that you explain this to a child, and for their first taste get the best option. For instance the hairy northern one didn’t like broccoli, but when I got him eating tender stream broccoli he started to be interested in the plain stuff. Berries are notoriously bland or sharp sometimes, so it’s worth first of all buying the expensive ones and then risking a cheaper version. Apples and oranges come in amazingly different tastes and sizes.

2) Don’t get put off by an initial refusal, just keep trying or try alternative presentation or cooking methods. E.g. Roasted vegetables are much tastier than boiled, and my son will only eat uncooked carrots.

3) Breakfast on the run: school runs argggh! I don’t like food in the morning, so my top tip is to switch breakfast and fruit snack around if you feel the same. So I’ll have an apple or banana for breakfast and toast later as a snack. Teenagers might prefer this too; just give them something larger for snack, like a healthy granola bar (see the post on snacks coming soon!)

4) Fruit Juice: not from concentrate is an easy way to start the day for the whole family and is an immediate tick. If you are struggling it can be another tick later on, just make sure it is a different fruit.

5) Uncooked is fine: I always have cucumber and carrots in the house, so that on a busy night I can be sure they have some vegetables; even pizza night

6) Tinned is a good back up plan: Tinned sweetcorn (with no added sugar or salt if possible), is another tip as my kids will eat it cold or hot and it can be added to pretty much any meal.

7) Frozen favourites: Adding peas or sweetcorn to pasta or rice in the last few minutes is a great way to quickly include vegetables

Clever Sauces: Better cooks than me just whizz up the vegetables into a sauce so that the kids don’t know they are eating it. My option is to use tinned tomatoes as the base for a sauce.

9) Fun drinks: Fruit can be added to milkshakes or you can make your own juices if you are feeling creative and imaginative and the kids will probably really enjoy getting involved.

10) Add something to it: To make fruit for Dessert more tasty add a good probiotic yogurt with no or little added sugar. Use honey or manuka honey to sweeten if needed.

It can be done. It’s just about taking it day by day, some determination, a bit of subtlety, imagination and a degree of sneakiness! But to keep you going, just remember that you are investing in your future with your kids and their future health; that kind of makes it worth while. The great thing is that as a side-effect you will feel healthier and have more energy, especially if there were a lot of less healthy snacks in there beforehand. Any questions let me know. Any ideas, feel free to share!

This post is being written as part of the blog prompt for #DoSomethingYummy from Typecast which is the campaign for CLIC Sargent Charity for children with cancer. It hit a note with me because just after Little Dimples was born I had a cancer scare for about 6 months. The terror that hit me was immense, but there is one thing that I know would feel worse and that would be one of my children falling seriously ill.

Whilst I was writing this post I heard about a little 12yr old boy living near me who is suffering a rare form of cancer. There is no treatment available in the UK but hope in Germany and the States. Every little counts, but it’s needed FAST. Here is his Facebook group and the article in my local paper with more specifics. While he was in remission, this little boy raised £5000 for charity himself, so I’m hoping that he gets a massive dose of Karmic love back for him. So far they have raised £21,000, but they need £500,000, so all we need is lots of Mums to give £1 or 100,000 to give £5. Here is where you donate.

Many Mums worry about how they can feel the same about another child after their first. How could you possibly feel that much love? For me I felt that my love to Curly Headed Boy got even bigger when I saw how lovely he is with Little Dimples, and how close they are. My brothers are twenty years older than me, and not close to each other. So I hadn’t seen that sort of sibling love close up, and it’s really lovely.

I assumed it was obvious to him, but one day I asked my son wether he knew that I loved him as much as my daughter and I nearly cried when he shook his little head. How could he not know, when I constantly told him I loved him and hugged him? I was careful to repeatedly remind him afterwards that I love him and that I love him as much as my daughter. I also remind him when she is naughty, that it was his idea to have another child in the first place! (He nagged me for a year for a sister; good thing she came out a girl!).

But it is different. It’s the same amount. But it’s a different feeling, and they have had different effects on my life.

Curly Headed Boy is my soul mate, its a deep intense love, and he has been a guide to me about who I am and what I want to be in this life.

Little Dimples is my sweetheart, it’s a much lighter love, and she has helped me to get stronger in myself and realise what I love to do in this life.

(Some people might wonder where the big northern hubby might fit into this; he teaches me what I want to have in this life)

It’s a really amazing experience to go from technically barren, to falling pregnant at 36 without trying and then most of all discover that you love being a Mum. It’s a huge part of why I do what I do as the ‘Mummy whisperer’, because I think I am so, so, so lucky to enjoy it so much. I love my work, but I love my children more and I hope that I don’t ever have to face the idea of losing them.

I’m friends on twitter and Facebook with people that I know have fallen out with other people in the long and distant past. In ‘real life’, I might stay on ‘polite’ terms depending on the situation; like with neighbours.

I’m also happily available for any blogging community like BritMums, Love All Blogs, Tots100, Net Mums, Mumsnet, ooh and if Huffington post or Parentdish fancied me, then I’m here! But I can totally understand that this could be frowned upon as many are much more loyal to just one community.

I’m trying to mix a balance between four wise, but contradictory pieces of advice …

Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face

Judge people on how they treat you

If they did it to someone else, they’re just as likely to do it to you

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer

We all makes mistakes

Everyone deserves a second chance

There have been times in my past where I’ve been upset by friends sitting on the fence, I think it can easily make you a little paranoid. In a way the clarity of being disliked is very secure! However that is really rather daft, as not everyone in the world fancies both David Tennant and Ryan Reynolds, so why would we all have the same likes and dislikes in terms of combinations of friends?

It might sound cynical to say ‘keep your friends close and your enemies closer’, but when I wrote about the ‘Mums Standing Up Together Campaign‘ idea I’d had, my twitter time line got very quiet, and it was almost like my back itched. Eventually a mummy blogger I only vaguely knew let me know that she had been inundated all day by messages about it and my suspicions were correct. But should that actually bother me? After all when I thought about it on reflection and realised that there are many different types of discussion, I also realised that to do what I want to do will mean that this happens a hell of a lot more. I’ve been warned about people appearing supportive, but not being behind closed doors, however, on the other hand there are times when I have been really nice to someone in a situation where they needed help, but wasn’t really close or fond of them at all.

I was talking to a good friend yesterday, and she explained that in ‘cave man’ times, we would have competed psychologically for the men, who used the more simple technique of clubbing each other over the head. The woman who survived the psychological attack and appeared stronger emotionally and mentally would appeal more to the physically stronger man. So if it’s that hard wired into us to be horrid sometimes, maybe we shouldn’t blame each other for it and just get on with it? Does it mean that we can’t but help to view every woman as competition?

Anyway, those are just my musings. What do you think? Do you stick to a clique, or try to be friends with everyone? Is it fickle to be in both Mumsnet and NetMums? Do they mind? I admit to feeling a subtle pressure to pick one blogging community and not be a tart and spread myself around all Love all Blogs, Tots100 and Britmums. Are there people out there subtly recording my fickleness; I suspect so?

Right I’m off to a toddler group; another bastion of female cliqueness! So that Little Dimples can learn to share by hitting someone over the head. Soon she’s going to be facing these all important questions about friendships, but at the moment, just being the same age is about all the criteria she needs.

I was in total geeks heaven; my first radio interview with Nick Coffer on BBC 3 Counties. There were dials, buttons, screens, computers, flashing things, headphones; it was amazing. I’d been on blogtalk radio before and interviewed by phone for local independent radio, but here I was being interviewed on BBC Radio, and I realised that I’d made a big decision – I love radio studios!

The great My Daddy Cooks who normally has a show on the weekend on BBC Three Counties, had taken on one of the Bank Holiday Christmas shows and really kindly asked me along. I admit to being scared sh**less, and desperately writing notes in the waiting room as his introduction talked me up more and more and I panicked about not being able to remember how to talk, let alone anything else. But he was a star. How someone can talk so fast, press so many buttons, and keep guiding me to talk more/less, louder/quieter, quicker/slower, I don’t know, but he must be a natural at it.

So here it is…..

Want to know how many kisses I do?

Or the first time I’ve really talked honestly about how badly 2011 started for me?

What about my 6 tips for being a contented parent?

Or how I lost 2 stone in weight without diets or going to the gym?

Here is the link, incase you aren’t able to listen to it straight from this blog.

Lisa on BBC3CR

Big thank you’s to BBC3CR, Nick and the big hairy northern one who had to look after a couple of sick kids while I did the interview. How do you think I did? Be kind, remember it was my first ‘proper’ radio show!
